Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, have the highest rates of Diabetes in our country.  And 31 % rate of obesity among children 2-5 yrs old. This is a result of being taken off our Traditional foods hundreds of years ago, and forced into the western diet and colonization.  We went from foraging food, hunting, and living in harmony with our Mother: to processed flour, sugar, diary and alcohol.  Best preventative medicine is getting back to some of our Traditional food ways.  We form our relationship to food at a young age,  viewing Food as Medicine will nourish the body, mind, and spirit.

It's a huge passion of mine, when working with Native Youth and their nutrition, by getting them connected to their Traditional foods. All living things have spirit, and our Ancestors honored the power of Plants and their medicine through ceremonies, songs, and offerings. When we eat and gather our Traditional foods, it awakens and bonds us to our first medicines. We learned the powers behind our plant medicine from the watching the creature teachers. The plants will also speak to us, if we are patient enough to listen. They Nk' wu Nation from Rogers shown here, are gathering their First foods for a Traditional Dinner served Nov. 17th 530 p.m.  I am so proud of this group, wanting to step up and make this happen.

November 15, 2018 marked our third year of offering a Traditional dinner served to the community, hosted by the Nk’ wu nation at Rogers High school. It felt amazing to be back in the kitchen again with these kids that are eager to learn the medicine. We are able to use the home ec room that provides six small kitchens with all the essentials. The students help during class when they can, along with other student body that wants to participate. It was a blessing to have such determined youth to make this possible, and to keep the tradition going.
